MAY Wow Its been a very busy summer both fishing & at the Marina Cafe --- the weeks have gone so fast. An update firstly on snapper front -- as I said earlier the cold water made fishing tough but all came right in March with very good catches mainly in the evenings - best to date 10.08kg to Neil Foote from Mangawhai--A couple of weeks in July they all went on holiday again but have arrived back early in May with some amazing fishing both staylining & soft baits
Hapuka & bluenose fishing has been very good on each trip out into the deep reefs with many super happy anglers
On marlin scene its been a hard slog for us compared to past seasons but we still managed to catch a fish in most tounaments we were entered -- Lucky Sally caught heaviest striped marlin 99.8 kg to win Classic Boats comp & Havelock North Fire Team came second in Russell Fire tournament with Tag & Release striped marlin & a yellowfin Tuna There are still marlin here in early May this year - maybe like last season here till early June.
Albacore have been around all summer with catches nearly every day while marlin trolling - during NZ Nationals we found huge areas of tuna with cathes of 10 to 50 fish a day [all mostly released] alot around 25kg size
Yellowfin have been on missing list with very few caught.
Broadbill - we have not done any target trips ourselves but several have been caught lately outside the 'garden patch' one boat tagged two est 80 &100 kg
PS Note - Charter boat 'Primetime' from Whangaroa landed a striped marlin 204.6 kg a massive fish for his deckhand Jimmy Gigger { 1.5 kg short world record]
Kingfish seem to be around in numbers as of now - we will see what happens in next few weeks which is normally best

LATE NEWS 18th May On our way out for a days Hapuka fishing - trolling a couple of lures [which you do] you guessed it - on jumps a striped marlin - tore off 300 meters an fell off [buggar] - carried on out & 15 minutes later wham - another one which was unlucky for this fish as 1 hour later John Archer landed a 85 kg striped marlin -[ 160 meters outside Stevensons Island ]
Well the winter weather has not been too flash with many cancelled fishing trips so bring on spring with longer & warmer days & good fishing.
There has been some very good catches of bass & bluenose out in deep reef areas in last week of July
All the Best Sally & Terry Lay
ps Thanks to Kim Nilsson 3D Imaging for time & patience teaching us old dogs new tricks - wonderful.
